North Carolina Baptist Campus Ministry
Student Summer Missions Frequently Asked Questions

What is BCM Student Missions?

BCM Student Missions is a volunteer missions program that offers college students an opportunity to work along side a career home/foreign missionary for a 6-10 week period.  The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina sponsors this program.

Who pays the expenses for the summer missionaries?

BCM Student Missions is a student-sponsored program. The money received in our state collegiate summer mission's fund comes from students in BCM groups across North Carolina.  Currently we have ministries on 38 different college and university campuses.  These funds pay the travel costs and expense allowance for all student missionaries serving in the United States. Students serving in foreign assignments may need to raise some of their own expenses.

Will I stay in one area or move around?

The field of service where you will serve will be responsible for your living arrangements for the summer. These arrangements vary from field to field. The most common living arrangement is with church families in the community where you serve. Some students live in the homes of their supervisor.

What kind of orientation is given to Student Summer Missionaries?

An orientation for North Carolina BCM Student Summer Missionaries is held each spring semester. This year, the orientation week will be at Camp Caraway near Asheboro, North Carolina May 25-27, 2014. Student Summer Missionaries are commissioned on Saturday, April 5th as a part of the BCM Spring Conference at Camp Caraway Conference Center. Also, each state that receives Student Summer Missionaries holds an orientation at the beginning of the term of service, usually the first week of June.

Are visits by parents, family members, or friends permitted while I am on the field?

Any planned visit to the field should be cleared with the local field supervisor of the Student Summer Missionary and should not take place until 5 weeks into the summer.

When will I be notified about my appointment?

At the completion of state interviews, emails of the appointments made by the State Student Summer Missions Selections Committee will notify students. Students will be asked to accept or deny their position at this time and will need to return the acceptance card within one week of their notification.
